Shopify Plus development: B2B, Functions and checkout

For merchants weighing up Shopify Plus, or already on it and paying for capabilities they don’t yet use: customer-specific B2B pricing, custom Functions apps, checkout extensions and ERP integration.

Fit

When Plus is worth it, and when it isn’t

Appropriate when

  • B2B pricing is customer-specific: Plus adds unlimited catalogues, direct catalogue assignment to companies and locations, deposits and partial payments
  • Discount, delivery, payment or validation rules need custom apps containing Shopify Functions, which only Plus stores can use
  • You need checkout UI extensions in the information, shipping and payment steps, which are limited to Plus
  • Several stores, brands or markets share operations and integrations

Not worth it when

  • Your B2B needs fit what Shopify made available on all plans in April 2026: company profiles, payment terms, volume pricing and up to three active B2B catalogues
  • The one feature you need is available in a public App Store app, which can use Functions on any plan
  • The real problem is an integration or an app clean-up, which Plus won’t fix
  • Your requirements go beyond Shopify’s model altogether

Engagements

What Shopify Plus work typically involves

  • Replacing Shopify Scripts

Scripts stopped running on 30 June 2026. Tiered discounts, shipping rules and payment method logic that lived there are rebuilt as Shopify Functions in a custom app, and tested against real baskets.

  • B2B from the ERP

Companies, locations, price lists and payment terms held in the ERP brought into Shopify’s companies and catalogues, and orders sent back with the right account references.

  • Checkout extensions

Delivery instructions, purchase order numbers, trade account messaging or upsells added in the checkout through supported extensions rather than retired checkout customisations.

  • Several stores, one operation

Products, stock and orders across stores kept consistent with the ERP and warehouse, so each store isn’t integrated separately.

  • Moving up from Shopify

An existing store moved to Plus with apps reviewed, Functions and extensions built, and integrations extended – usually without a rebuild.

Common problems

  • Paying for Plus, running it like Basic. B2B, Functions and checkout extensions unused while apps do the same job for another subscription.
  • Logic that disappeared with Scripts. Discounts or shipping rules that silently stopped applying at the end of June 2026.
  • Integrations built per store. Each store with its own connector, its own failures and its own copy of the data.
  • API versions left behind. Shopify supports each stable API version for at least twelve months; custom apps have to be moved forward.

Integration and migration

Plus uses the same Admin API and webhooks as other Shopify plans, so the integration approach is the same: agree which system owns each piece of data, queue changes, reconcile regularly and alert a person when something needs judgement.

Moving to Plus from another platform raises the usual migration questions – URLs, customer passwords, order history, integrations and apps – with B2B data and checkout logic added to the list.

In practice

What this work typically involves

Shopify Plus work usually starts by listing the rules that live in apps, retired Scripts or manual processes today, then deciding which belong in Functions, which in checkout extensions and which in the integration with the ERP. Each is built in a custom app, tested against real baskets and customer accounts, and released in stages.
